Davis Elected Chair of Federal Advisory Committee on Juvenile Justice

Columbia, S.C., 10/29/07)--Harry W. Davis, Jr., Director of the Children's Law Center, has been elected Chairman of the Federal Advisory Committee on Juvenile Justice (FACJJ). The FACJJ is a national council comprised of representatives appointed by the Governor of each state and territory. Davis also serves as the Vice-chair of South Carolina Governor's Juvenile Justice Advisory Council.

The purpose of the FACJJ is to advise the President and the U.S. Congress on juvenile justice policy and funding. The FACJJ submits an Annual Report to the President and to the Congress in which it identifies pertinent juvenile justice issues and makes formal recommendations regarding federal policy, legislation, and programming. The FACJJ also advises the Department of Justice Administrator of the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) in its oversight of state juvenile justice grants.

The 2007 FACJJ Annual Report to the President and the Congress includes various recommendations dealing with the processing and treatment of juvenile offenders, sex offender registration of juveniles, detention reform, a child's right to counsel, and the disproportionately high number of minority youth in juvenile justice.

The Children's Law Center, located in Columbia, is a training and resource center for attorneys, court workers, guardians ad litem, law enforcement, and other professionals involved in child protection and juvenile justice proceedings in the South Carolina courts.

The Children's Law Center is a program of the University of South Carolina School of Law.
