Former governor James “Jim” Hodges of Columbia will be awarded an honorary doctoral degree from Francis Marion University during commencement ceremonies on December 15. Hodges also will be the commencement speaker for the 282 candidates for FMU degrees. The Lancaster native served as the 114th governor of South Carolina. Hodges served 11 years in the S.C. House of Representatives (1986-1997), where he was chairman of the chamber’s lead law making body, the House Judiciary Committee. He also served as minority leader.

In Memoriam
1949
Roy V. Lind, Sr. died Thursday, December 6, 2007. After retirement as executive vice president and legal counsel for Capital Holding Corporation in Louisville, Ky., he served as Director of Development for the USC School of Law. Lind served as a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives 1953-54 and as a Columbia municipal judge 1955-56.
1967
Martha Garrison Williams passed away peacefully in her home on November 26, following a lengthy illness. She commenced employment with Liberty Life Corporation in 1968 and was employed by its affiliates, Liberty Corporation, Cosmos Broadcasting and Liberty Properties, serving as legal Vice President, General Counsel, and Secretary of these companies. She retired from Cosmos Broadcasting in 2006.
1971
Hal J. Warlick, 60, of, Daytona Beach, Fla, died December 5, 2007, at Halifax Medical Center, Daytona Beach. A native of Clover, Warlick served in the South Carolina National Guard for many years.
