1960

Attorney Harvey G. Sanders Jr. of Leatherwood Walker Todd & Mann, will be profiled in the 2007-2008 edition of "Who's Who in American Law." Sanders' areas of legal practice include corporate law, corporate litigation, business litigation and complex multi-district litigation.

1963

The S.C. Bar Foundation Board of Directors announces that B. Henderson Johnson Jr. with Johnson Johnson Whittle and Snelgrove will receive the DuRant Distinguished Public Service Award for meritorious service to both the legal profession and his community on Friday, January 25, during the plenary luncheon at the Bar Convention.

Robert Gamble of Anderson is scheduled to be sworn in Thursday, Jan. 10, as the circuit public defender for the 10th Judicial Circuit. Gamble was nominated for the position by a panel of attorneys representing Anderson and Oconee counties, which make up the 10th Judicial Circuit, according to the release. He has been the chief county public defender for Anderson County since 1984, and previously has served as its assistant public defender.

1968

Collins & Lacy, PC is pleased to announce that firm founder, Joel W. Collins, Jr. has been elected President of the Foundation of the American Board of Trial Advocates, (ABOTA) the national organization devoted to preserving the civil jury trial. He will take office in January 2008.

1972

Turner Padget Graham and Laney, PA announces that Edward R. Cole has been elected a shareholder of the firm located at 2411 North Oak St., Ste. 301, Myrtle Beach 29577.

1974

Collins & Lacy, PC is pleased to announce that firm founder Stanford E. Lacy has been elected to serve on the Board of Directors for the SC Workers’ Compensation Educational Association. Stan has been very involved with the South Carolina Workers’ Compensation Educational Association, serving as President from 1997-1999. Stan’s law practice includes over 30 years of experience before the Workers’ Compensation Commission, practicing workers’ compensation exclusively for over 20 years, working on all phases of workers’ compensation, including appeals to all appellate courts. He has argued many landmark cases to the Supreme Court including Breeden v TCW and Pee v. AVM.

Willard D. Hanna Jr. announces his return to individual practice and opening of Hanna Law, PA located at P.O. Box 14610, Surfside Beach 29587.

1977

Justin A. Thornton, a former federal prosecutor now in private practice as a white collar defense attorney specializing in criminal tax cases, has been named by Washingtonian magazine as one of the top lawyers in Washington, DC. A member of the bar in North Carolina and South Carolina, as well as the District of Columbia, Thornton obtained his undergraduate degree from UNC at Chapel Hill and his law degree from the University of South Carolina.

1978

Attorney Bradish J. "Brad" Waring, a member in Nexsen Pruet's Charleston office, has been appointed as the honorary Danish consul for South and North Carolina by decree of Her Majesty Margrethe II, Queen of Denmark. As consul, Waring will help promote trade and business with Denmark with a focus on the Carolinas and assist Danish citizens with issues they may have and services they may need while traveling in North and South Carolina; including issues relating to Danish passports.

Clawson & Staubes, LLC announces that Lynn Lawandales Crooks has joined the firm located at 126 Seven Farms Dr., Ste. 200, Charleston 29492.

1982

Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP announces that Marsha A. Ward has joined the firm as counsel in the Atlanta office located at 999 Peachtree St., NE.

1984

David M. Yokel announces the opening of the David M. Yokel, LLC Law Firm located at 1 Whitsett St., Greenville 29601.

1986

Columbia lawyer Mark S. Barrow has been named to the 2007-2008 board of directors of USLAW, a national organization comprised of 61 law firms that become part of the USLAW NETWORK by invitation only. Barrow is a founding partner of the law firm of Sweeny, Wingate & Barrow. In addition to this new appointment, Barrow has led attorneys from across the nation as chairman of the USLAW transportation committee since early 2006, where he has focused on leading the development of a nationwide emergency response team that transportation and trucking companies can contact for immediate response to legal issues and accidents.

Nexsen Pruet, LLC announces that Stephen P. Groves Sr. has joined the Charleston office located at 205 King St., Ste. 400, 29401.

1987

Sowell Gray Stepp & Laffitte, LLC announces that J. Calhoun Watson has become managing partner of the firm located at 1310 Gadsden St., Columbia 29201. He has also been selected for two community positions. A long-time member of the Historic Columbia Foundation, Watson has been elected president of the board of trustees. Watson has been a member of the foundation since 1999. Also, Watson has been appointed as one of the 26 inaugural members of the South Carolina Access to Justice Commission.

1988

McAngus Goudelock & Courie, LLC announces that Donna Givens has joined the firm as a member of the Columbia office located at 700 Gervais St., Ste. 300, Columbia 29201.

Paul "Jay" Cone and Mike Gruenloh announce the opening of the Cone Gruenloh Law Firm located at 138 St. Phillip's St., Charleston 29401.

U.S. Attorney Reginald I. Lloyd announces Dean H. Secor has joined the Charleston office as Assistant U.S. Attorneys located at 151 Meeting St., Ste. 200, 29402.

1992

1993

James Edward "Ward" Bradley, a lawyer from the West Columbia firm of Moore, Taylor & Thomas was recognized as a newly elected member of ABOTA at the S.C. chapter of the American Board of Trial Attorneys' annual dinner. "Ward Bradley is not only deserving of this outstanding distinction, but has the intellect, savvy and integrity as a trial lawyer and a person to bring credit to our profession as a whole," firm managing partner Mark Taylor said in a press release.

1994

McWhirter, Bellinger & Associates, PA announces that Joseph Robert Dasta has become a shareholder of the firm located at 1807 Hampton St., Columbia 29201.

1995

The National Stock Exchange, Inc. (NSX(R)) announced January 17 the appointment of Shane Swanson as an At-Large Director on the National Stock Exchange, Inc. Board. He was also appointed to the Board of NSX Holdings, Inc., the Exchange's parent company.

1996

Columbia lawyer David Anderson was recently elected to the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys' Association's executive committee. He will serve a three-year term representing the Second District. Anderson, a shareholder in the firm of Richardson Plowden & Robinson, focuses his practice on construction law, insurance defense, premises liability and real estate litigation.

Turner Padget Graham and Laney, PA announces that Reginald W. Belcher has been elected shareholder of the firm located at 1901 Main St., Columbia 29201.

1997

Attorney Christian G. "Chris" Spradley, a Batesville-Leesville native and partner with the law firm of Moore, Taylor & Thomas, has been elected to the South Carolina Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers board of directors. Spradley is also a member of the South Carolina Trial Lawyers Association, American Association for Justice and the Tri-County Bar Association.

Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd, PA announces that Louise (Ceasie) Myers Johnson has joined the Columbia office located at 1201 Main St., Columbia 29201.

Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough, LLP announces that Joseph M. Ramseur Jr. has been elected to partnership of the firm located at 104 S. Main St., Greenville 29601.

1998

William P. Early has been named a partner at Pierce Herns Sloan & McLeod LLC. He practices in personal injury, medical malpractice and toxic torts.

1999

Nexsen Pruet announced that Amy Harmon Geddes has been named a member (partner) of the firm’s Columbia office. Geddes practices in the areas of tort litigation, commercial litigation, and business litigation, with an emphasis on products liability and bad faith insurance claims. Geddes served as law clerk to the Honorable Alexander S. Macaulay of the Tenth Judicial Circuit before joining Nexsen Pruet.

Christina Jacuzzo has been promoted to of counsel in Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough's Charlotte office, effective January 1. A former associate, she practices in the areas of finance, corporate law, and telecommunications.

Paul E. Hammack announces the opening of Hammack Law Firm, PA located at 1527 Wade Hampton Blvd., Greenville 29609.

2000

Nexsen Pruet announced that Brian T. Price has been named a member (partner) in the firm’s Greenville office. Price practices in the corporate and commercial finance groups. His experience includes corporate law, startups, and banking and finance. He earned a joint law degree / M.B.A. from the University of South Carolina. He is a member of the Greenville County Bar Association, the South Carolina Bar, and Leadership Greenville.

Nexsen Pruet announced that Joseph M. Kahn has been named a member (partner) in the firm’s Greensboro office. Kahn is an attorney with the health care group. His experience includes fraud and abuse matters, hospital/physician relationships and joint ventures, contract negotiations, managed care issues, and litigation. He is a member of the Advisory Opinion Task Force for the American Health Lawyers Association’s Fraud and Abuse Practice Group. Additionally, he is an editor for Prognosis, the health care newsletter published by the Health Law section of the North Carolina Bar Association and the North Carolina Society of Health Care Attorneys.

Nexsen Pruet announced that J. David Black and J. Frederick (“Rick”) Reames III have been named members (partners) of the firm’s Columbia office. Black practices in the areas of complex civil litigation, commercial litigation, software litigation, intellectual property, and procurement. He also has broad experience in electric-utility law, including electric-service rights, eminent domain, territorial assignment disputes, and all aspects of litigation, regulation, and counseling, with an emphasis on cooperative organizations. Before joining Nexsen Pruet, he served as law clerk to the Honorable Kenneth G. Goode of the Sixth Judicial Circuit. Reames practices in the areas of taxation, trust and estate planning and administration, and general business law. Reames earned an L.L.M. degree in taxation from New York University School of Law.

Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough has promoted J. Christopher Clark to partnership, effective Jan. 1. Formerly of counsel, Clark focuses his practice on commercial and civil litigation. He is experienced in representing clients in complex real estate transaction disputes as well as in products liability, business torts, insurance defense, and errors and omissions claims. Clark serves as chairman of the board of directors of the Health Care Partners of South Carolina Inc., a nonprofit community health center dedicated to providing affordable health care to the medically underserved.

2004

An attorney with extensive federal government experience has joined Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP as special counsel in its Washington office to assist clients with federal and state government contracting, veterans' issues, and other federal government relations matters. Previously associated with Nelson Mullins in the Columbia, S.C., office, Ron Thomas most recently served in Washington as President George W. Bush's appointee as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy, United States Department of Veterans Affairs. Thomas earned a Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 2004, where he was awarded a J. Edgar Hoover Foundation Scholarship.

Mr. and Mrs. Audie Lee Altman of Myrtle Beach announce the engagement of their daughter, Ginger Marie Altman of Conway, to David Paul Jordan of Conway. Jordan is employed with Smith, Sapp, Bookhout, Crumpler, & Calliham as a tax attorney. A May 10, 2008 wedding is planned at Trinity United Methodist Church in Conway.

The following have joined the Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough Greenville office: Stefania Cammarata Bondurant practices in the areas of corporate, international trade and business and immigration. She interned at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rome, and has experience handling cases for the S.C. Centers for Equal Justice. She attended the Katholieke Universiteit School of Law in The Netherlands as an Erasmus student and earned a law degree at LUISS University in Rome in 2002, where she also served as a fellow researcher and teaching assistant. In addition to English, she speaks Italian and has studied German, French and Spanish.

In Memoriam

1950

John Robert "Bob" Peters, Jr., 80, of Hampton, died Friday, January 11, 2008, at Palmetto Health in Columbia. He was a 16 year member of the Board of Trustees, served as Chairman of the Intercollegiate Athletic Committee, and was Trustee Emeritus. Peters was a former member of the law firm of Peters, Murdaugh, Parker, Eltzroth & Detrick. He served as Chairman of the Lowcountry Council of Governments and was Chairman of the first Hampton County Council. He served his country in the United States Navy and was a Past Commander of the American Legion Post 108.
