1962

First National Bank of the South has formed a regional board of directors for the Greenville, South Carolina market area. Robert A. (Bobby) Dobson, III became licensed as a Certificate of Certified Public Accountant in 1964 and was employed as President and Tax Attorney by Dobson & Dobson, Attorneys at Law from 1969 to 1993. Since 1993, Dobson has been involved in private investment management and volunteer activities and serves as Chairman of Dobson Ministries, a non-profit Christian ministry that provides religious audio and video tapes to shut-ins and children. He also serves as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Homeless Children International, Inc. and as Vice Chairman of the Jesus Video Project of South Carolina, as well as leading numerous other religious, fraternal and community organizations. Dobson was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Public Service from Limestone College in 2002.

1963

Attorney B. Henderson Johnson Jr. was named as the 29th recipient of the DuRant Distinguished Public Service Award. The S.C. Bar Foundation Board of Directors conferred this honor on Johnson at the Bar's annual convention January 25 in Charleston. Johnson is of counsel with the Aiken firm of Johnson Johnson Whittle and Snelgrove. Johnson's many accolades include being named a member of Order of the Wig and Robe and his selection as one of the "Best Lawyers in America." His service to the legal profession includes membership with the S.C. Criminal Defense Lawyers, the S.C. Trial Lawyers Association and as president of the Aiken County Bar Association.Johnson has spent tireless hours working with youth. He served as a coach, umpire and "jack-of-all-trades" for the Aiken Pony League. Known as the man who would do "anything and everything that needed to be done to give children an opportunity to participate in sports," Johnson was twice awarded a World Series Sportsmanship Award and was also inducted into the Aiken County Sports Hall of Fame.In Aiken, Johnson is the only person to have been named both Citizen of the Year (in 1969) and Man of the Year (in 1998) by the Aiken Chamber. He also received a Distinguished Citizen Award from USC Aiken in 2005, as well as the Order of the Palmetto. He is particularly known for his selfless work with the Hitchcock Rehabilitation Center, the USC Aiken Partnership Board and the American Cancer Society.

1964

Thomas S. Tisdale, a Partner in Nexsen Pruet's Charleston office, has been elected to the Board of Trustees of the Southern Education Foundation, an organization focusing on fairness and excellence in education in the South. Tisdale is an experienced attorney who practices in the litigation and appellate groups at Nexsen Pruet. He has been listed in Chambers USA: America=s Leading Business Lawyers in litigation and in Best Lawyers in America for business litigation and First Amendment law.

1968

Attorney Joel W. Collins Jr. has been elected president of the Foundation of the American Board of Trial Advocates. Collins, a founding partner of Collins & Lacy in Columbia, took office in January. Collins conducts an active practice in complex civil litigation and white collar criminal defense.

1969

Alvin C. Biggs announces the relocation of his law firm to 100 S. Main St., Ste. M, Summerville 29483.

1974

The South Carolina Workers' Compensation Educational Association has announced that Stanford E. Lacy has been elected to its 2008 board of directors.

1975

Margaret Pope and Belton Zeigler (class of 1982) announce the formation of Pope Zeigler, LLC located at 1411 Gervais St., Ste. 300, Columbia 29211.

1977

Attorney Howard Grubbs has been named leader of the life sciences industry group at Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice, PLLC. Grubbs specializes in environmental law and has experience in complex transactional and litigation matters nationwide.

1980

Hon. Helen Elizabeth Burris and Hon. David R. Duncan, the Clerk of Court and the staff of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court announce the reappointment of Chief Judge John E. Waites by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit to a second 14-year term effective June 27, 2008.

1981

Lynn Lawandales Crooks has joined the real estate section of Clawson & Staubes LLC as counsel practicing commercial real estate.

1982

Margaret Pope (class of 1975) and Belton Zeigler announce the formation of Pope Zeigler, LLC located at 1411 Gervais St., Ste. 300, Columbia 29211.

Timothy E. Meacham of Conway has joined the administration of Coastal Carolina University in a part-time capacity as Associate University Counsel. He has been providing legal assistance to the Audit Committee of the Board of Trustees for the past year and will now take on additional duties in contract litigation, according to Edgar Dyer, executive vice president of the university.

1984

Attorney E. Courtney Gruber has joined Young Clement Rivers as an associate in the firm's Charleston office. Gruber will practice with the workers' compensation group.

S.C. Speaker of the House Robert W. Harrell Jr. has appointed Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough partner Bobby Pearce to serve on the Research Centers of Excellence Review Board. The board awards endowment funds to senior research universities in South Carolina to create professorships in science and engineering fields. Pearce recently completed a third term as general counsel for the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce. He serves on the board of trustees of the Trident Technical College Foundation and also has served on the local board of BB&T. In 2004, Pearce was honored by Gov. Mark Sanford and then-S.C. Commerce Secretary Bob Faith as an economic development ambassador.

1985

Mason Alexander, Managing Partner of the Charlotte office of labor law firm Fisher & Phillips LLP has been named to the list of 2008 North Carolina Super Lawyers. Super Lawyers is a listing of outstanding lawyers from more than 60 practice areas who have attained a high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement.

The Mike Kelly Law Group announces that Ruskin C. Foster has joined the firm's Columbia office as Of Counsel located at 500 Taylor St., Ste. 400, Columbia 29201.

KPMG LLP, the U.S. audit, tax and advisory firm, announced that W. Hartley Powell of KPMG's Charlotte office, has been admitted into the partnership of the U.S. firm. Powell provides tax services to Strategic Relocation and Expansion Services clients in the Southeast. Before joining KPMG, he worked for the South Carolina Secretary of Commerce. Currently, he serves as a member of the North Carolina and South Carolina Economic Developer's Associations, the Southern Economic Development Council and the South Carolina Bar Association.

1988

Attorney Donna Givens has been elected president of the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys' Association for 2007-2008. She is the second woman elected president in 40 years since the SCDTAA's inception in 1968, according to a press release. Givens is a member of McAngus Goudelock & Courie's Columbia office, and she practices in the area of litigation including civil rights defense, Tort Claims Act defense, auto torts, mediation, construction and insurance coverage.

Attorney Elizabeth T. "Lisa" Thomas has joined the Charleston office of Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd. She will be a member of the firm's health-care industry group, which represents South Carolina hospitals, physicians' groups, pharmacies, assisted-living facilities and other health-care providers.

1990

Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin McDonald has been appointed to serve as interim U.S. attorney for South Carolina.

1991

John T. Lay, Jr., of Ellis, Lawhorne & Sims, P.A., has been selected as president-elect of the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys' Association (SCDTAA). Lay will serve a one-year term as president that will begin in November 2008.

Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein, LLP announces that Bobby Mozingo has been elected partners of the firm located at 200 Meeting St., Ste. 301, Charleston 29401.

John R. Varholy completed a four year term as managing partner of the London offices of Troutman Sanders, and recently took up the role of practice group leader for Troutman's newly formed Energy Trading and Marketing Practice Group.

1992

Attorney C. William "Billy" McGee has been elected as managing shareholder of the law firm of Gallivan, White & Boyd. McGee has been a shareholder with the firm since 2000 and has been employed with the firm since 1992. While serving as the managing shareholder, McGee will continue to practice in the areas of products liability, drug and medical device litigation and mass tort litigation.

1993

Mary L. "Molly" Hughes, a partner in the Charleston office of Nexsen Pruet, has been named to the Alumni Executive Council for the Wofford College National Alumni Association. This Council is made up of 22 distinguished graduates of the college. Hughes practices in the employment & labor and business litigation practice groups at Nexsen Pruet. She has been named a Certified Specialist in Employment and Labor Law by the South Carolina Supreme Court.

William E. Hopkins Jr. and Susan F. Campbell (class of 2002) announce the opening Hopkins & Campbell, LLP located at 1122 Lady St., Ste. 1010, Columbia 29201.

1994

Murphy & Grantland, PA announces that Alice P. Adams has joined the firm as Of Counsel, located at 4406-B Forest Dr., Columbia 29206.

1995

Wesley M. Graybill and John E. Lansche Jr. (class of 2001) announce the opening of Graybill & Lansche, LLC located at 2324 Devine St., Columbia 29205.

1996

D. Jay Davis Jr., an attorney with Young, Clement, Rivers in Charleston, has been elected to serve a three-year term on the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys' Association executive committee. A partner at the firm, Davis also serves as the chair of the professional liability practice group.

Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd, PA announces that Alexander G. (Alex) Shissias has become a shareholder of the firm located at 1201 Main St., Columbia 29201.

1997

Attorney Louise "Ceasie" Myers Johnson has joined the Columbia office of Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd. She will serve as special counsel in the firm's financial institutions industry group. Johnson focuses her practice on bankruptcy and creditors' rights litigation.

Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough has elected attorney Joseph M. Ramseur Jr. to partnership. Formerly of counsel, Ramseur focuses his practice on family law, serving clients in litigation ranging from complex financial issues to divorce to contests related to custody and the best interests of children.

1998

Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd, PA announces that Roopal Ruparelia Samuels has become a shareholder of the firm located at 1201 Main St., Columbia 29201.

Nexsen Pruet, LLC announces that Franklin Daniels has joined the firm as Special Counsel located at 1727 Glenns Bay Rd., Surfside Beach 29575.

Pierce, Herns, Sloan & McLeod, LLC announces that William P. Early has become a principal of the firm located at 321 E. Bay St., Charleston 29401.

Attorney Franklin Daniels has joined Nexsen Pruet as special counsel in the firm's Myrtle Beach and Charleston offices. As a member of the real estate group, he will focus on general business transactions, economic development and incentives, public finance, non-profit and tax-exempt issues, state and local government taxation and hotel and convention center projects. Before joining Nexsen Pruet, Daniels held several titles at Burroughs and Chapin Company in Myrtle Beach, including senior vice president and general counsel, chief legal and strategic planning officer, and chief legal and administrative officer.

1999

The South Carolina Workers' Compensation Educational Association has announced that O. Shayne Williams has been elected to its 2008 board of directors.

Hamilton, Martens, Ballou & Sipe, LLC is pleased to announce that Cathy Lightsey Weaver has become a member of the firm. Weaver, a Fort Mill native, heads the Firm's Real Estate Practice group and her practice focuses on real estate development and financing.

Andrew N. Cole has been named a shareholder in the firm of Collins & Lacy. Cole focuses on construction law, defense litigation, personal injury, complex litigation and premises liability. He is also an appellate advocate, having served as a staff attorney for the South Carolina Court of Appeals and as a law clerk for Hon. Jasper M. Cureton.

Max T. Hyde, Jr. has been made partner in the firm of Harrison, White, Smith & Coggins. Hyde practices real estate litigation, business litigation and domestic relations. He served as law clerk and administrative assistant to Kaye G. Hearn, Chief Judge of the South Carolina Court of Appeals, before joining the firm in 2001.

Attorney Sallie S. Holder of Leatherwood Walker Todd & Mann has been awarded the 2007 Young Professional of the Year by the Greenville Chamber of Commerce. This award recognizes a person between the ages of 22 and 39 for outstanding involvement in the community. Holder serves as the board chairman for the Carolina Ballet Theatre, and is also on the boards of the Children's Museum, the S.C. Children's Theatre and Christ Church Episcopal School. Her area of legal practice includes management-side employment and labor law.

2005

Jill Matthews has been hired as an Assistant District Attorney in the Luzerne County District Attorney's Office, Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania.

2006

James H. Swick, LLC announces that James B. Hindersman has become a member of the firm located at 1421 Bull St., Columbia 29201. (803) 253-8785. The firm has changed its name to Swick & Hindersman, LLC.

Macel Lynn Hubbard married Stephen Janoschka on July 28, 2007. She also became an associate with the law firm of Gentry Locke Rakes and Moore in Roanoke, Virginia in September. Her practice focuses on workers' compensation defense and insurance defense.

Attorney Jacqueline Norris Davis has joined the firm of Bradford & Bradford as an associate attorney. Norris will practice in the areas of civil litigation and commercial and residential real estate.

Attorney Katie Walter has been selected to serve on the board of directors for Greenville's A Child's Haven, a specialized therapeutic treatment program for young children whose development has been delayed by poverty, neglect and abuse. An associate at Mullins Riley & Scarborough, Walter's corporate practice focuses on securities, mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance and bank regulatory matters.

2007

In Memoriam

1951

Everett N. "Bull" Brandon, of Columbia, 84, died Tuesday, February 12, 2008, after a brief illness. A native of Belmont, N.C., Brandon spent the majority of his legal career with the S.C. Attorney General's Office.

1959

James W. Alford, 78, died Sunday, February 24, 2008, in the Presbyterian Home, Lexington, S.C. Mr. Alford was a founding member of Barnes, Alford, Stork & Johnson, LLP, which was established in 1983, upon the merger of Barnes, Stork, Wolff & Reyner and the firm of Alford, Johnson & Salane. He was well known for his courtroom presence and his sense of humor as a defense trial attorney. His name appears in the 1993, 1994 and 1995 editions of the reference work, "The Best Lawyers in America." He retired from practice in 2000.

1962

Joseph "Joe" Eslie Hines, Jr., 72, died Friday, February 8, 2008. Hines was the former director of the Spartanburg County Office of Registration and Elections and spent 23 years on the county Election Commission before being named director of registration and elections in 1991. He held that post until his retirement in 2003.

1973

Thomas English McCutchen III, 59, of Columbia, died February 17. He was a member of the Richland County Bar, the South Carolina Bar and the American Bar Association since 1973. He was a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, the Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference, the Board of Governors of the South Carolina Trial Lawyers Association, a sustaining member of the Trial Lawyers of America and served on the Plaintiff's Task Force of the American Bar Association. He was also a member of the South Carolina Supreme Court Committee on Character and Fitness.

1976

Attorney Thomas Harrell Barr of Pawleys Island and Georgetown died peacefully at home with his family Monday, February 25, 2008. He was sixty-one years old. He practiced with the firm Moore, Flowers and Doar in Georgetown for two years, then as a sole practitioner from his family home on Prince Street in Georgetown, and then at Pawleys Island, until his retirement in 2006. He was a past president of the Georgetown County Bar Association.
