1943

The South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs presented the 2008 Dublin-Robinson Consumer Champion Award to Sarah Leverette for her outstanding efforts to inform consumers and actively serve the community as an advocate and volunteer.

1970

Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein LLP announced that Richard M. Unger has joined the Firm as a partner in the Real Estate & Commercial Development Practice Group and a member of the Resort, Hospitality and Planned Development Industry Team. Mr. Unger will work out of the Columbia and Charleston offices.

1973

Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough announces that Sonny Graves has joined the firm located at 104 S. Main St., Ste. 900, Greenville 29601.

H. Brent Fortson announces the opening of Fortson & Stephenson, LLC located at 100 Tower Dr., Unit 12, Greenville 29607.

1974

Thad Vincent has joined the Milligan Law Firm as counsel, practicing in personal injury. He has more than 30 years of experience and previously was a partner in Vincent & Bostic and principal of the Vincent Law Firm.

Moore, Taylor & Thomas, PA announces that Hon. C. David Sawyer Jr. has joined the firm as partner and will work out of the firm's Saluda office located at 110 S. Main St., 29138.

1975

Marti Miles Bluestein and John Nichols of Bluestein & Nichols, LLC announce that Stacy Elizabeth Thompson (class of 2000) and John Delgado have become partners in the firm and that Ashley Trout Thompson (class of 2007) has been hired as an associate. The firm has changed its name to Bluestein, Nichols, Thompson & Delgado, LLC and is now located at 1614 Taylor St., Columbia 29201.

1977

William C. Hubbard of Columbia, S.C., was recently nominated to be the Chair of the American Bar Association House of Delegates, the second highest elected position in the world's largest voluntary professional membership organization. Hubbard was nominated at the association's Midyear Meeting in Los Angeles in February. The House of Delegates will formally elect Hubbard in August at the 2008 ABA Annual Meeting in New York City.

1978

Bradish J. (Brad) Waring, a Partner in Nexsen Pruet’s Charleston office, has been named President of the Historic Charleston Foundation.

1979

Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd, PA announces that Anne S. Ellefson has been elected Managing Director of the firm. She will continue to practice at the Greenville office located at 75 Beattie Place, Two Liberty Square, 29601.

Allenbaugh Samini, LLP announces that Hon. John R. Steer has joined the firm as a senior partner in its Washington, D.C. office located at 700 12th St., NW, 20005.

1984

Judge Aphrodite K. Konduros announces the location of her new chambers located at 305 E. North St., Greenville 29602.

1986

The South Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault has presented its Award of Excellence to Cely Anne Baker Brigman, a Darlington County magistrate, in recognition for her work on domestic violence cases. Brigman received the award during the coalition’s annual awards luncheon in February.

1989

Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough announces that Marion Sieffert has joined the firm located at 104 S. Main St., Ste. 900, Greenville 29601.

1990

Kevin F. McDonald has been named Acting U.S. Attorney for the District of South Carolina to fill the vacancy by outgoing U.S. Attorney Reginald I. Lloyd.

1991

Attorney John T. Lay, Jr., a shareholder at the law firm of Ellis Lawhorne & Sims, P.A., has been elected to the American Board of Trial Advocates.

1993

A.C. "Michael" Stephens was sworn in as public defender for the 4th Judicial Circuit, which encompasses Chesterfield, Darlington, Dillon and Marlboro counties, on Monday, February 25, 2008.

1994

Christine Sloan has joined the firm of Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice, PLLC in its Greenville office in a senior counsel capacity. Sloan joins the real estate practice group as senior counsel where she focuses her practice in commercial real estate. During law school, she was the recipient of several awards, including: the James Petigru Compleat Lawyer Award, the Pro Bono Service Award and the American Jurisprudence Award, Torts I. Sloan was also a member of the Order of the Coif, Order of the Wig and Robe, John Belton O'Neall Inn of Court and the South Carolina Law Review.

1995

A. Johnston Cox, also a shareholder at Ellis Lawhorne, has been elected to the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel.

1997

Laura Bardsley Houck announces the opening her new firm located at 1027 W. Main St., P.O. Box 217, Laurens 29360.

1998

Ellis R. Lesemann, a partner in the Litigation Department of Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein LLP, has been appointed to serve as Chair of the Lowcountry Food Bank Board of Directors. The mission of the Lowcountry Food Bank is to feed the hungry of the ten coastal counties of South Carolina by soliciting and distributing food and grocery products to nonprofit agencies serving the poor and by educating the public about the problems of and solutions to domestic hunger.

1999

Lyn Odom has joined the firm of Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice, PLLC in its Greenville office. Odom will work in an of counsel and joins the tax practice group and concentrates his practice in state and local taxation and related matters, including economic development. He was a member of the Order of Wig and Robe while at the School of Law.

Attorney Leslie S. Riley has joined McNair Law Firm, P.A. as special counsel in its Charleston office. Her areas of practice will include environmental and administrative law, with particular emphasis on wetland permitting, stormwater management and health regulations.

2000

The Hood Law Firm, LLC announces that James B. Hood and Elloree A. Ganes have become partners of the firm located at 172 Meeting St., Charleston 29401.

2003

Collins & Lacy, P.C. is pleased to announce that Ross B. Plyler has joined the firm as an associate in the practice areas of Insurance Coverage, Business and Employment law, and College and University law. While in law school, Ross was a member of the South Carolina Law Review and a recipient of the CALI Award (American Jurisprudence) Contracts I, Torts II.

2004

Tara Lee Louise Austin (class of 2005) and Ben Gibbs Leaphart, Jr., were married on March 8, 2008 at John Wesley United Methodist Church, Charleston, South Carolina.

Jason L. Branham announces the opening of Branham Law Firm, LLC located at 106 E. Main St., Lexington 29072.

2005

William Neill, director of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Academy, announces that Brandy A. Duncan has joined the agency located at 5400 Broad River Rd., Columbia 29212.

2006

Willson Jones Carter & Baxley, PA announces that Jared M. Pretulak has become an associate in the firm's Columbia office located at 4500 Fort Jackson Blvd., 29209.

Kathryn Free announces the opening of Kathryn F. Free, Attorney at Law located at 1205 Church St., Elgin 29045.

Jermaine Johnson has joined the firm of Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice, PLLC in its Greenville office. Johnson joined the firm as an associate. Johnson will practice in the firm's business litigation practice group. He comes to Womble Carlyle from Collins & Lacy P.C. in Columbia where he served as a law clerk. Johnson was captain of the American Bar Association Moot Court Team and a member of the Order of Barristers. He received his bachelor's degree in chemistry from Clemson University.

Vaux & Marscher, PA announces that Mark S. Berglind has joined the firm as an associate located at 1251 May River Rd., P.O. Box 769, Bluffton 29910.

2007

Michael R. Jeffcoat, PA announces that Bradd Bunce has become an associate of the firm located at 4723-A Sunset Blvd., Lexington 29072.

In Memoriam

1949

Oren Oscar Jones died on Friday, February 29, 2008 at the AnMed Health Medical Center. Jones practiced law for over fifty years, during which time he served as President of the Anderson County Bar Association, and served on the Board of Governors for the South Carolina Bar Association, the Grievances and Ethics Committee, the South Carolina Senior Lawyers Division and Anderson Inns of Court. He loved his profession, his law partners, and his friends at the bar across the state, and the camaraderie among the professions.

1958

William John Nicholson, 73, of Columbia, died Wednesday, March 19, 2008. He was a law professor at the University of South Carolina.

1976

Hugh Stewart Roberts, 71, of Columbia, S.C. died on March 9. He practiced law for over thirty years in Columbia.
