Bert Goolsby to be the May Speaker at the South Carolina Center for the Book

A 1962 graduate of the School of Law, Bert Goolsby, is set to be the May Speaker at the South Carolina Center for the Book at the South Carolina State Library, on May 22, from 12:00 - 1:00 pm.

On Thursday, May 22, 2008, from noon to 1:00 p.m., the South Carolina Center for the Book located at the South Carolina State Library will host Bert Goolsby, author of Harpers' Joy. "John Grisham meets Andy Griffith a legal thriller packed with humor, heart, and a healthy dose of Southern charm." Candle Reid's life is falling apart. He's a lawyer whose competence is compromised by alcoholism. His wife kicks him out, and then his law partner dies. Can things get any worse? Dewey Coltraine's life is just beginning, or so he thinks. He has just married the prettiest girl in town, and he has a new job. But when he's arrested for killing one of Harpers' Joy's most influential men, will Candle Reid be able to save him? (www.sleuthedit.com)

Bert Goolsby, a native of Alabama, is a member of the legal profession and a graduate of The Citadel, the University of South Carolina School of Law, and the University of Virginia School of Law. He has authored a collection of short stories, Sweet Potato Biscuits, and two novels, Her Own Law and Harpers' Joy. The latter will be serialized in upcoming editions of South Carolina Lawyers Weekly. Recent articles authored by Goolsby appear in Marlo Thomas' The Right Words at the Right Time, Volume 2, and the Wiregrass Christian Family Magazine. He is married to the former Prue Fraser of Walterboro. They have a son, Phillip Lane Goolsby, M. D., who resides in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

This free lunchtime program is presented by the South Carolina Center for the Book, the South Carolina affiliate of the Library of Congress Center for the Book. The SC Center for the Book is a cooperative project of the SC State Library, the University of South Carolina School of Library and Information Science, and The Humanities Council SC.
