NOTES FROM THE SBA PRESIDENT

FACULTY CANDIDATES AND STUDENT INVOLVEMENT

We are going to have several faculty candidates visit the law school over the next month. The Law School has allocated time during each candidate's visit for a meeting with students. During this meeting there is only room for a limited number of students. However, because there are several faculty candidates coming this semester, this provides an opportunity for many students to participate. If you are interested in meeting some of the faculty candidates or want to participate in one of these meetings, please contact Beth Davis (davisb@law.sc.edu) or one of the Faculty Selection Committee Student Representatives (you can find their names and contact information on the Bulletin Board beside the SBA Store.)

SBA STORE - NEW ITEMS

The SBA Store now has green tea, hot chocolate, and microwaveable Campbell's soup.

SKI TRIP

Only 3 weeks left to signup! You must turn in your check by October 27.

FALL GOLF TOURNAMENT

This year's Fall SBA Golf Tournament will be held at Timberlake Golf Course on Friday, October 13. There will be a shotgun start at 2:00pm. The cost is $35/member and $40/non-member. The cost includes: cart fees, range balls, drinks, banquet afterwards with hamburgers and hotdogs, and prizes. Bring the checks for your team members to the SBA store and sign up today.

US SUPREME COURT CHIEF JUSTICE ROBERTS TO VISIT LAW SCHOOL

On Friday, October 20 at 10:00am you will have the opportunity to witness an event that, to our knowledge, has never occurred in any other law school in the country. In our law school auditorium, four of our law students (Brook Andrews, Andrew Mathias, Sarah Bayko, and Meghan Johnson) will participate in a Moot Court argument before a panel of five Chief Judges. The five Chief Judges include:

The Honorable John G. Roberts, Jr.
Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States

The Honorable Jean H. Toal
Chief Justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court

The Honorable William Wilkins
Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit

The Honorable Kaye G. Hearn
Chief Judge of the South Carolina Court of Appeals

The Honorable Joseph F. Anderson, Jr.
Chief Judge, U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina

While you can imagine that everyone in the city and state will want to attend this event, Dean Pratt has arranged to reserve the majority of the seats in the auditorium for our law students. In addition to seats in the auditorium, there will also be an overflow room where students, attorneys, and the press can watch the event via video feed. Because there are not enough seats in the auditorium for every student, there will be a lottery held to determine which students can sit in the auditorium (see below for lottery procedure). Those students not selected in the lottery will be selected through the same lottery for tickets to the overflow rooms.

Make sure to put this event on your calendar and be on the look out for further information about the event and the lottery.

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THIS EVENT »

Summary:

  1. Oct. 20th at 10:00am in the law school auditorium
  2. Seats in the auditorium and overflow room will be determined by lottery
    • 1/3 of the available seats will be allocated to each class (i.e. 1/3 for 1Ls, 1/3 for 2Ls, 1/3 for 3Ls)
    • Students will slide their ID cards by class at a date to be announced
    • A lottery will be held for each class
  3. All classes before 11:30am that Friday will be cancelled
  4. All classes at 11:30am or later will be held as scheduled

Mr. Weinstein started his legal career as a prosecutor in the Manhattan District Attorney's Office. He then moved to a highly-regarded litigation firm in San Francisco, where he made partner. After seven years as a partner (and a leave-of-absence during which he worked for a non-profit in Zimbabwe) Neil resigned as a partner from his law firm. In the six years since, Neil has worked part-time as an attorney in San Francisco while also doing assignments with human rights organizations in Thailand, India and Cambodia. Neil and his wife are currently traveling for a year, after which they plan to begin long-term work overseas in international development.

Neil will talk about the dissatisfaction that many lawyers have with their career and the reasons for that dissatisfaction. He will also talk about how he has largely avoided those pitfalls, the difficult choices he had to make in the process, and how you can increase your chances of finding a satisfactory career in the law. He will also share stories about his varied experiences in legal practice.
