NOTES FROM THE SBA PRESIDENT
PROTECT YOUR TEXBOOKS AND LAPTOPS
Free Textbook Stamping and Laptop Engraving
Due to a history of book thefts during exam time, Officer Adams from the USC
Police Department will be stamping textbooks and engraving laptops in the
Law School Lobby on Wednesday, Nov. 1 and Thursday, Nov. 2 from 11am-2pm.
Textbooks will be stamped with a special seal, and your information will be
written in invisible ink so it can be identified if stolen or sold back to
an area bookstore. Laptops and other personal valuables can be engraved and
registered with USC PD to help identify property if stolen. PLEASE register
any items you plan to engrave with the USC PD to help expedite the process.
Go to http://webapps.csg.sc.edu/lespips/ to register and list property
items. These services are free so please come by and take advantage on
Wednesday or Thursday. If you have further questions contact Leigha
Blackwell at leighab@alumni.unc.edu.
THANK YOU
Thank you to Keri Moore, Tad McLeod, and everyone else who helped make
Monsters Ball 2006 a huge success. It was a great night with over 400
students from the law school, business school, medical school, and public
health school in attendance. The costumes were very creative with everything
from spooky and scary to funny and just plain unusual. In addition, while
the "spirits" flowed freely, everyone was on their best behavior and the
National Guard Armory is excited to have us back anytime.

about the findings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in Peru.
After the film, we will be joined by Professor Moss Blachman, who will lead
a discussion on the film and on other human rights crises in Latin America.
One summary of the film noted that "In STATE OF FEAR the spectacular beauty
of Peru is juxtaposed with the disturbing revelations of that nation's Truth
Commission detailing a 20-year reign of terror. It began in 1980 with the
violent Maoist guerrilla cult, Shining Path, whose bloody doings were met
with equal violence from Peru's democratically elected government." Dinner
WILL be provided, but please RSVP to a member of the ILS as soon as
possible.

organizations and volunteers who participated in the Children's Halloween
Carnival. It was a wonderful experience for all!
SBA BLOOD DRIVE
The SBA sponsored annual Gamecocks v. Tigers Red Cross Blood Drive will be
held on Wednesday, Nov. 8th from 10a-4p in the law school lobby. Sign up
on-line by visiting www.givelife.org, entering sponsor code "gamecocks," and

on Wednesday, Sept. 6th. Gamecocks v. Tigers Blood Drive t-shirts will be
given to donors. You helped us reach our goal of 32 usable pints!
FOOD DRIVE
"Best Class" Fall Food Drive kicks off on Oct. 26th.
For over 12 years the Law School community has stepped up to the plate and
made a real difference in the lives of many people facing hunger and a lack
of food safety. Volunteers from the Pro Bono Program are joined in this
huge effort by members of Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity. The competition
to be declared the "best class" is between the 1L's, 2L's and 3L classes and
is based on the total weight on donated non- perishable food. On Friday,
Nov. 3rd special volunteers are needed to help move the donations from the
Pro Bono office to the Lobby. The Harvest Hope Food Bank truck is scheduled
to arrive at 12:30. Check out the bulletin boards for the latest numbers.
For more information about hunger in SC go to www.harvesthope.org
Help your class gain bragging rights as being the "Best" law school class in
SC. Applause, applause to the "best first day of the food drive" ever! Over
1 ton on opening day! Hands down we are the best law school in SC.
TRUANCY
AIM- the Attendance Improvement Mediation program
There will be training for the AIM program on Feb. 2, 3, 4 and 8, 2007.
Trained mediators will then be scheduled to help midlands schools and
students solve their truancy issues on a personal level. Mediation is a
proven method for decreasing the incidence of tardiness and unlawful
absences. Many local schools are partners in this program with the
Community Mediation Center. The 24 hour interactive training covers such
topics as theories of conflict, the stages of mediation and techniques for
interviewing. If you are looking for a pro bono opportunity that has a
direct link to the skills necessary to be an effective lawyer, this is an
excellent project.
For more details check other the Pro Bono web page or come by the office.
An application must be submitted prior to the training.
GUARDIANS AD LITEM
The CASA Program will conduct a training program to become a volunteer
guardian ad litem GAL) at the Law School in Jan. A GAL is appointed in every
abuse and neglect case in SC. Trained volunteers investigate the
allegations, interview the parties, review the documents and make a
recommendation on what they consider to be in the best interest of the
child. Being a GAL is a powerful way to help SC's most vulnerable children.
GAL's in Richland County have a special advantage; they have the support of
an extensive staff with vast experience. No one goes it alone.
The training will be held from 6:30 - 8pm on Jan.23, 25, 30 and Feb. 1st.
Room TBD
Information, applications and screening forms are available in the Pro Bono
Office. Don't wait to the last minute- complete the application now.
PROJECT AYUDA
Project Ayuda: Law Students Helping the Hispanic Community in conjunction
with the Pro Bono Program has a new opportunity just for those interested in
teaching English as a second language. Speaking Spanish is helpful but not
necessary. Many of the students in this Richland District Two after school
program speak English fluently but need help with vocabulary and writing
skills. The best part of this volunteer project is you can help as often as
you want to! The students drop in every Tuesday and Thursday from 4-7. You
can only go every other Tuesday evening? And can only go from 5-6? No
problem!! Plaza Communitaria is glad to have you help.
Come by the Pro Bono Program office for a simple application, details of the
project and a map to the school! For anyone who has ever had to learn a
second language this is your chance to share that experience with young
people working hard to improve their lives.
TWEN SIGN-UP
If you want the latest information about volunteer opportunities and one-day
events, sign up on TWEN-Pro Bono Opportunities.

NOTES FROM STUDENT AFFAIRS
PMBR - 1Ls and 2Ls
Signing up for PMBR before November 17, 2006 is advantageous to 1Ls and 2Ls
for various reasons:
- You only need a $100 deposit this year before Nov. 17th to lock in the
current price. In addition to the deposit, you get three free study aids
for classes you are in now or next semester. Your choice.
- Once we are 3L's we will have to make an entire $200 deposit and will not
get study aids. Get something for something now!
- The price will go up after the 17th and again next year.
Now, why do you need PMBR? There are lots of reasons, but I will highlight
the biggies.
- The MBE, the multiple choice portion of the South Carolina bar, is key.
A score of 111 is required to even have your essays graded. A score of 110
or less is automatic failure. PMBR offers two separate courses for the
multiple choice portion of the bar. Every single point is valuable!
- The average passage rate for those who take PMBR as opposed to those that
don't.
- Excellent study materials - including tapes, cds, flashcards or outline
books for classes you are in now!
If you want to discuss further, please stop me in the hall or email me. You
can also speak to any other PMBR rep.
Have a great day,
