NOTES FROM THE SBA PRESIDENT

CAREER WEEK

Career Week is this week! There will be free lunch Mon. - Thurs. and a reception Thursday night after the evening presentations. For more details on the schedule of events and speakers, go to the link on the law school website (www.law.sc.edu or www.law.sc.edu/career_week/) or ask one of the students at the information table each day during lunch. With over 50 speakers coming throughout the week you won't want to miss an event. Here is the weekly breakdown:

MONDAY

1:10pm - 2:00pm "How to Dress and What to Say: Business Dress and Etiquette"
Auditorium
Learn about proper etiquette at various events including interviews, dinners, and receptions. In addition, find out how having information and pictures on websites such as facebook.com and myspace.com may affect your career.

TUESDAY

12:45pm - 2:00pm "Where Should I Practice and How Can I Get the Job?"
Auditorium
A panel of alumni will answer questions and discuss how they got their jobs and the advantages and disadvantages of working for a small firm, large firm, the government, or on your own.

WEDNESDAY

1:10pm - 2:00pm "Do I Have to Practice Law?"
Auditorium
Hear about job opportunities outside of legal practice and how a law degree can help you obtain these jobs and career success.

THURSDAY

12:45pm - 2:00pm "Discover the Possibilities"
Auditorium
Alumni who have achieved remarkable career success will explore the exciting career possibilities that are available to you with hard work and a law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law.

5:00pm-7:00pm
Attorneys from different sections of the South Carolina Bar will make 15-20 minute presentations. The presentations will include a brief overview of the legal issues faced by attorneys in a particular area, what a typical day would be like if you practiced in that area, as well as what interviewers look for from law students.

7:00pm-8:00pm
Law Lobby
There will be a reception for panelists, students, faculty, and alumni.

FRIDAY

11:30am - 2:00pm Question and Answer
Law Lobby
Career Services will be in the lobby to help answer any additional questions you may have about your legal resume, the best ways to get a summer job, and career opportunities.

THURSDAY NIGHT BOWLING

Spots are going fast so pick up a signup sheet outside the SBA store, and turn it back into the store as soon as possible. We can not reserve a spot for your team until you turn in your signup sheet with all the checks. The cost is $35 per person and will include bowling and shoe rental for Thursday Feb. 15, March 8, March 22, and April 8. This year we will also have prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams.

NOTEWORTHY

Bakari Sellers, a second year student at the South Carolina School of Law and a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives will be featured on ETV's Statehouse Tonight, Thursday, February 1, at 7:30 pm. The program will also air at noon on Sunday, February 4.

Please do not store valuables in the top of your locker. This area is not secure. We have had a number of articles stolen from lockers.


NOTES FROM STUDENT SERVICES

MARCH 10TH MPRE EXAM

Tuesday, January 30th is the deadline to register for the March 10th MPRE exam. The fee is $55 and you register on line: www.act.org/mpre. The MPRE Review course will be held on Saturday, March 3 in room 333 of the law school from 9a-2:30p. Registration for the review course will take place beginning February 19 in the Student Services office. The fee for the book and course is $50.00.

MAY GRADS BAR LOAN INFORMATION

If you are planning to take out a Bar Loan, please come to Student Services, Room 131-K for information, the bar loan application, and school certification. These are private loans and are not processed through the Student Financial Aid office. Each loan application requires certification that you are a candidate for graduation.

SOUTH CAROLINA BAR APPLICATION

If you are planning to take the July South Carolina Bar Exam, the final filing period for the July Bar Exam ends Wednesday, January 31 at 5:00 p.m. The filing fee is $750 and can be turned in at the Supreme Court.

AUBURN BASKETBALL TICKETS

If you would like to attend the Auburn/USC basketball game on Wednesday, January 31, please come to the Student Services office as there are student tickets remaining for this game.

CAREER WEEK

Please try to participate in at least one of the very valuable Career Week sessions, and encourage your classmates to do the same. This is an excellent opportunity for our students - let's make sure we make a great impression on the judges and attorneys who are donating their time!

CONGRATULATIONS

Natalie Armstrong, 3L, and Rhodes Bailey, 3L, won their first (real-life) case in their Criminal Practice Clinic. Way to go!

BEST WISHES

Jenny Dunaway, 3L and Travis Moore, 3L were married on Friday, January 26, 2007. Travis will be leaving on Monday for Camp Shelby in Mississippi to begin his training (until May) for his tour of duty in Afghanistan. Thank you, Travis and Godspeed!


NOTES FROM PRO BONO

VITA TAX PREP PROGRAM

Think you might be able prepare tax returns for other people? Just not sure about your skills? No problem, the Pro Bono Program has the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) software loaded on to two laptops. You are welcome to come by and peruse before taking the online test to become certified to help. The good news about the test is that you can take it until you pass it.

TRUANCY MEDIATION

There are still two slots in the Truancy Mediation training session scheduled on Feb. 2, 3, 4 and 8, 2007. You must complete the short application and submit it no later than Monday. This is an excellent skill building event that takes little time during the actual volunteering.

CASA

Congratulations to the over 20 law students enrolled in the Richland County CASA training. When these advocates become active Guardians Ad Litem this will double the number of law student GALs, just this year. To better communicate with GALs, the Pro Bono Program has established a TWEN site- Sign up on the CASA/GAL support group. With this resource we can better communicate, share information and exchange ideas with these special volunteers.

SYMPOSIUM ON COMMERCIAL SPEECH

On Friday, February 16th, the South Carolina Law Review, the Law School, and the College of Mass Communications are sponsoring a symposium titled The Future of Commercial Speech in an Age of Emerging Technology and Corporate Scandal. National experts will present their thoughts on a variety of commercial speech topics such as integrated communications strategies, securities compliance, and false advertising. All law students are invited to attend. South Carolina attorneys who register and attend can obtain CLE credit. For more information, please visit www.sclawreview.org/symposium.
