NOTES FROM PRO BONO
VITA
One last chance to help with taxes. Recent developments have resulted in the Law School Pro Bono moving the VITA program from the West Columbia Library to the Law School. Even if you are not quite ready to prepare the simple tax returns, we could use some help with the initial interviews and intake. Assistance is needed on Wed evenings, 6-8 and Sat mornings from 9-12 from now until March 31st. Just drop in to the Pro Bono Office and we will explain how you can be a part.
TRUANCY MEDIATORS
Have you got a conflict? Talk to one of the newly trained truancy mediators. They are practicing their mediation and listening skills and after 30 hours of training they have some knowlege!! Congratulations to: Bobbie Wofford, Erika Easler, Shanaya Ludley, Samantha Ferguson, Paola Pinzon, Ben Bruner, and Dan Wiley.
CASA GALs
Watch for photos on the web (Pro Bono News) of the swearing-in of the new Richland County CASA guardians-ad-litem. It was an overwhelming class, one of the largest for Richland County and most definitely the most law students to be trained at one time! All GALs are encouraged to sign up on TWEN for CASA/GAL Support. This will be a virtual meeting place for us to share news, issues and other information important to being an effective GAL.
SBA has created this brand new section in the E-brief to allow you, as the students, more of a voice. This section will allow you, as students, to include information in the E-brief on upcoming community service projects, study aids, etc. that may not otherwise be associated with a particular student organization at the law school. To submit information for this section of the E-brief please email it to Ricardo Bunge (SBA Communications Chair) at bunge2@mailbox.sc.edu. The SBA President will make the final determination of whether or not submitted information is included in the E-brief.
OXFAM AMERICA COLLEGIATE CLICK DRIVE
Would you like to honor our school in the humanitarian effort, the Oxfam America Collegiate Click Drive? It costs nothing but enthusiasm. Our whole school will receive national recognition for all USC community and students' efforts. Please start clicking on the "Click Drive" button, Monday, Feb. 12th, at www.povertyfighters.com, to provide microfinance loans, worldwide. Corporate sponsors donate 25 cents each time a person clicks during the competition on the Povertyfighters web page ... anyone may click up to twice a day per computer on behalf of USC. The Povertyfighters site will report daily totals for each school. Let our state's flagship school [students, professors/staff, even alumni and friends] provide leadership in public interest by example, using our learned hands to click daily for a month and a half ... as "the wheels of justice grind slowly." :-) Doesn't cost a dime, just your time. Your thoughtfulness is always greatly appreciated.
"The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step." The journey of a thousand dollars (for self-help loans), begins with one click.
P.S. FYI: Furman University (Greenville, SC) donated over $3,000 last year, by clicking, and won the national competition. Imagine what our entire university can do to continue this momentum of public service! This is an honor for all of South Carolina.
