NOTES FROM THE SBA PRESIDENT

CLAUDE SAPP/TEACHER OF THE YEAR VOTING

Two important awards will be voted on by the student body this week:

  1. Claude Sapp Award -- presented to the 3L who best exemplifies the characteristics of leadership, scholarship and industry. Only 3Ls allowed to vote.
  2. Teacher of the Year Award. All students vote.

These awards, as well as other awards and scholarships, will be presented at the Student/Faculty Awards Luncheon on April 12th. Be thinking of whom you would like to receive each award. More info to come on when voting will take place.

PEER MENTOR APPLICATIONS

Apply to be a Peer Mentor for the incoming 1L class!! Peer Mentor applications are due to Lindsay Joyner by Friday, April 6th. If you want to be a Peer Mentor and have not gotten an application or just have a question about the program, please contact Lindsay at linz1130@gmail.com.

CAROLINA CUP RECAP

Thanks to Tad McLeod and Christina Jay for all of their efforts in organizing the Carolina Cup excursion this year. From all reports, everyone had a fun and safe time. Thanks Tad and Christina!

FINANCIAL AID

If you plan to seek financial aid or a need based scholarship for next year, don't forget to complete the FAFSA and Need Based scholarship forms. The Need Based Scholarship form must be submitted to Room 105 by June 1st. Forms for summer financial aid will be available on the University website (www.sc.edu) on April 1, 2007.


SUPREME COURT LUNCH SERIES

Professors Josie Brown, Danielle Holley-Walker, and Eboni Nelson will discuss the "Constitutional Status of Race Consciousness in American Public Education." Specifically, they will conduct "An Examination of Parents Involved in Community Schools v. Seattle School District No. 1 and Meredith v. Jefferson County Public Schools." Lunch will be served, but please be sure to RSVP to Laura Long if you plan to eat.

IMMIGRATION SYMPOSIUM

The South Carolina Journal of International Law and Business is sponsoring this symposium. Titled "Changes in Immigration Law since 9/11," this event explores changes in the law, shifts in presumptions, and new regulations across various areas in immigration law. Also addressed will be the effects of the Patriot Act and Homeland Security Act on visa applications and adjudication. STUDENT/FACULTY BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

The USC law school student/faculty 3-on-3 basketball tournament will be held on Friday, April 6 beginning at 2:00pm over at the Blatt PE Center (Blatt gym) on Wheat Street. Sign-ups will be posted at the SBA store. Each team must have 3 members, and the winner will face Dean Rollins, Professor Helwig, and Professor Samuels in the final match. We need referees for the game (probably about 4-6). Anyone who would like to volunteer, who hopefully knows how to ref a basketball game, please email Dan Canedo at gatordan22@yahoo.com.


WOMEN-IN-LAW PIG PICKIN'

Women in Law had a successful Pig Pickin' Fundraiser last Sunday, March 25, and raised over one thousand dollars to donate to the local women's shelter. Women in Law would like to thank the following for helping to make the event successful: Travis Nagy, State Farmer's Market, Ben Bruner, Laura Long, Gilligan's Raw Bar and Grill, Pam Robinson, The Circuit Fitness Center, Logan Raye, Riverbanks Zoo and Gardens, Britton's Clothing, Publix, Piggly Wiggly, Dr. Linda Bone, Prof. Gregory Adams, all the attendees, WIS for covering the event, and all the Women in Law volunteers.


FOOD DRIVE RESULTS

"Over 100,000 pounds in just one year!" What an amazing accomplishment! When the Harvest Hope Food Bank truck rolled away from the Law School at 1:00, the 1L Class had recorded the most donated food and were declared the official "Best Class Food Drive" winner. Later in the day the 2L class added to their earlier total and arrived with a total record poundage of 32,890 pounds! Congratulations to everyone who contributed. The real winners are the 1,589 people who will have enough food for 3 meals a day for at least 4 days! Thanks to everyone for making the Law School a caring community!


DONATE TO HELP EAST BATON ROUGE SCHOOL SYSTEM LIBRARIES

The Annual Meeting of the Southeastern Chapter of the American Association of Law Libraries (SEAALL) is in Baton Rouge on April 11th.

Their 2007 community service project recipient is the East Baton Rouge (EBR) Parish School System, which accepted students forced out of New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina. Terrye Conroy, USC Law Reference Librarian, is the Chair of the SEAALL Community Service Committee. If you would like to make a donation toward the purchase of library books and supplies, stop by the law library with your check (to East Baton Rouge Parish School System with "Library Services" in the memo line) or cash by the end of the day April 10th.

Best Brief: Robert Wilson

JWL competitors submitted an appellate brief on the so-called "Bong Hits 4 Jesus case" and participated in two rounds of oral argument. Robert Wilson and Daniel Blomberg, as the top two competitors, will argue the Final Round Wednesday April 4, 2007 before the South Carolina Supreme Court. The Moot Court Bar extends its congratulations and thanks to all our participants.


NOTES FROM THE REGISTRAR

SECOND-YEAR PREFERENCE COURSES

These courses will be opened, if there are seats available, to all students on Tuesday, April 3, 2007 at 1pm. Rising 2Ls attempting to switch sections of a course should use the change section feature to avoid dropping the course.

HARDSHIP PETITIONS

Students must file a hardship petition to be considered for a closed course. Hardship petitions are available online (www.law.sc.edu/registrar/forms.shtml) and in the law registrar/academic services office, suite 137. Please return all hardship petitions to this office.

Hardship petitions will be reviewed on Friday, April 6, 2006. Decisions will be delivered to the petitioner?s student mailbox.

SECUREXAM

Students planning to use SECUREXAM must:

  1. Register online (www.law.sc.edu/registrar/securexam.shtml); please read the laptop/MACbook requirements carefully; SecurExam will not work with Vista or Office 2007
  2. Uninstall the old version (3.16a)
  3. Attend an installation session to receive new software (3.20) on Tuesday, April 3 at 1:30-2:30 in room 135; Wednesday, April 4 at 12:55-1:55 in room 236; or Thursday, April 5 at 12:35-1:35 in room 135

SECUREXAM installation sessions should take 10-15 minutes if students register and uninstall the old version before attending. Students cannot use the old version of SecurExam.

SPRING 2007 EXAMS

The Spring 2007 Revised Exam Schedule is available online (www.law.sc.edu/registrar/downloads/200711/200711-exams.pdf) and outside of suite 137 in the glass display case. Students should consult their professors about which classroom to meet in for exam instructions if more than one classroom has been assigned.

The price on the remaining 2006-2007 Facebooks has dropped to $12.00.

May grads might want to purchase them as a good reference to have on hand when you want to put a name to a face in your legal career. The biographical information included in the back of the Facebook also offers you some good points of contact. There are a limited number of copies available in JoAnne's office, rm. 131-K. Pick up your copy today!

SUMMER BAR REVIEW PAYMENT

Bar-Bri payment for the summer bar review ($1800) taken in Columbia or Charleston, is due on April 1 (April 2 because of Sunday). If you missed the SC Bar Review representatives on Thursday, you can still bring your payment to Student Services, rm. 131-K until 4:00 pm on Monday, April 2, 2007.

GRADUATION REGALIA

Graduation regalia will be given out in the law lobby on Tuesday, April 10 from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm. Mark your calendar! Please be there to pick up your cap, gown and hood or designate someone to do this for you. Remember, the Hooding ceremony is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. not 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 11. If you have not received your announcements, please call Balfour, 254-5330.

GRADUATION MARSHALS

Each year we look for 6 - 8 students to assist us with the Law School Hooding ceremony at the Horseshoe. If you will be in Columbia on Friday, May 11 from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon and would like to serve as a graduation marshal, please see JoAnne in Student Services, rm. 131-K for further details.

To Ginger and Daniel Blomberg, 2L on the birth of their daughter, Anne Alethea Blomberg, born on March 21 at 4:00 a.m., 6 lbs. 7 oz., 19.5 inches.
