NOTES FROM THE ASSOCIATE DEAN

PRO BONO ORIENTATION

All 1Ls are strongly encouraged to attend a lunch session on Tuesday, September 18th in the Auditorium on the Law School Pro Bono program, presented by Pam Robinson, our Pro Bono Director. The session will begin at 12:40 pm, and lunch will be served. Our program here at USC is the oldest voluntary law school Pro Bono program, and each year it gives students a variety of ways to positively impact the community around them.

DO NOT STORE VALUABLES IN THE TOP COMPARTMENT OF YOUR LOCKERS

Please do not store valuables in the top of your locker. This area is not secure. We have had a number of articles stolen from lockers.

PHI ALPHA DELTA

We will be having four meetings this semester, so please mark your calendars so you don't miss out. Remaining dates are September 19, 26, and October 31 - all are Wednesdays.

ENVIRONMENTAL LAW SYMPOSIUM

Mark your calendars for the upcoming Southeastern Environmental Law Journal symposium entitled "Balancing Private and Public Rights in the Coastal Zone in the Era of Climate Change: The Fifteenth Anniversary of Lucas v. South Carolina Coastal Council." The symposium dates are Thursday, September 20 and Friday, September 21. The Georgetown Environmental Law and Policy Institute at Georgetown University Law Center is co-sponsoring the event. Registered students who attend a majority of the panels are eligible to attend the banquet on Thursday evening held at the South Carolina State Museum. This presents an awesome opportunity to interact with experts in the field of environmental law, South Carolina public officials, renowned professors, and members of the legal profession. Interested students may register for free by sending an e-mail to SELJ@gwm.sc.edu.

BEACH CLEAN-UP DAY

Come join the Environmental Law Society Saturday, September 15, as we participate in The Ocean Conservancy's Beach Cleanup Day. We will be traveling to Sullivan's Island, South Carolina, to help clean up our coast. The timing of this Beach Clean up is especially relevant, as it takes place the weekend before the Southeastern Environmental Law Journal's Lucas Symposium. Come and see why the South Carolina Coast is such a special place before you attend the symposium to better understand the issues at stake. All students welcome. Please contact any member of the ELS or Keith Bartlett, at keithebartlett@yahoo.com.

Sign up on TWEN to get the latest information about Pro Bono activities and opportunities.

The deadline to join the Women in Law/Pro Bono Walk for Life: Steps Against Breast Cancer Team is September 14th. $20 and sign up in the Pro Bono Office, Room 233.

Bring a sandwich for lunch and donate your lunch money to help the survivors of the devastating earthquake in Peru. Sarah Beth Mulet spent part of her summer helping the people of Peru and has friends on site who will use our donations to help the children with schools supplies. International Aid programs are working to address the infrastructure relief but it is the little things that will help to bring normalcy to the families. A few hundred dollars from us can go a long way! Collection jar is in the Pro Bono Program Office.

Watch for your September Pro Bono Ideas flyer, arriving in mailboxes soon!
