CONGRATULATIONS ASHLEY!!!

The Louisiana Supreme Court recently cited Ashley M. Kearns's student Note, "South Carolina's Evolving Standards of Decency: Capital Child Rape Statute Provides a Reminder that Societal Progression Continues Through Action, Not Idleness." Ashley's article appears in the Survey of South Carolina Law, Volume 58. The court refers to Ashley's Note in State v. Kennedy, 957 So. 2d 757, 785-86 (2007). Ashley is a 3L, and serves as an Associate Student Works Editor on the Volume 59 Editorial Board. She will graduate from USC Law School in May 2008. WAY TO GO!

NOTES FROM PRO BONO

PROJECT AYUDA

Don't speak Spanish but want to help? Project Ayuda: Law Students Helping the Hispanic Community in conjunction with the Pro Bono Program has an opportunity just for those interested in teaching English as a second language. Speaking Spanish is helpful but not necessary. Many of the students in this Richland District Two after school program speak English fluently but need help with vocabulary and writing skills. The best part of this volunteer project is you can help as often as you want to! The students drop in every Tuesday and Thursday from 4-7. You can only go every other Tuesday evening? And can only go from 5-6? No problem!! You can go every week? Even better! Plaza Communitaria is glad to have your help. Application and information in the Pro Bono Office, Room 233

YOUTH ARBITRATION PROGRAM

What do you know about getting into trouble at school? Your first-hand knowledge or your willingness to help can work to set at-risk youth on a more productive path. The Richland County Sheriff's Department Youth Arbitration Program is seeking volunteers who want to help kids in trouble at school become accountable for their actions. You can be a part by attending training sessions starting on Oct. 18th and running until Nov. 9th Each Tuesday and Thursday night from 6-9. Applications and more information about this new project are now available in the office. Limited enrollment.

HELP THE DISABLED

Team Advocacy, a project of Protection and Advocacy for People with Disabilities, Inc. has a wonderful opportunity for those volunteers interested in health care, mental health, the disabled or the elderly. Upon completion of a short training session, volunteers work with staff members to conduct client interviews and complete surveys of services provided at SC community care facilities (i.e., nursing homes, group homes, mental health facilities, etc.) The joint findings are summarized into a report that is sent to DHEC for action. The training is brief; much of the knowledge is gained on the job. Investigations will be scheduled to fit your calendar and availability. Applications and more information are available in the Pro Bono Office. We would like to schedule a training session ASAP. Sign up today.

TWEN COURSE

From time to the time the Pro Bono Program receives requests for research or other short term, one time projects. They are often time sensitive. By signing up for the Pro Bono TWEN course, you can be the first to know about these opportunities to serve. If you are busy but still want to help, this may be the best way to hear about opportunities. Sign up today or stay in touch with one of our many Board members. Frequently these tasks go quickly!
