Please keep in your thoughts the family and friends of the six USC students who died Sunday in the devastating North Carolina house fire - undergrad or Law, we are, after all, one Carolina.
NOTES FROM THE SBA PRESIDENT
FACULTY SELECTION - STUDENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
Over the next few weeks, prospective faculty will be visiting campus for interviews. As part of the interview/hiring process, a panel of students will sit down with each candidate. Student feedback from these interviews will be a key factor in the Law School's hiring decisions.
We need student volunteers to conduct these interviews! If you would like to be a member of a student panel and help shape the faculty at USC, please email your name and the times you are available to your Faculty Selection Committee Representatives Tyler Winton: twinton@gmail.com or Andrea Sancho: sanchoac@gmail.com
NEW ATHLETIC TICKET DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM
A new ticket distribution method for basketball and FOOTBALL tickets will be implemented beginning with the 2007-08 basketball season. Students will now register for tickets online, print tickets at home and be rewarded for attending games and penalized for not attending games. Please see attached FAQ for the new ticket policy.
UVA NATIONAL SOFTBALL TOURNEY
The UVA School of Law is hosting its world famous softball tourney, the unofficial "law school national softball championship," the weekend of April 4-6th, 2008. USC Law sent a quality team to the tourney last year, put on a spectacular run and nearly knocked off the UVA gold team, the eventual tournament champion. We'd like to send another team this year to attempt to break the UVA juggernaut.
Due to the tournament's proximity to exams, and students' propensity to hunker down pre-exams, we are gauging interest to see if fielding a team is even a possibility. If we have enough interest, tryouts will be held in the early spring and the USC law team will play in the USC spring intramural league.
For more information on the Law School Invitational, please see www.ngsl.com. Please email Brooks Fuller if you are interested in playing on the team or have any questions: fuller.brooks@gmail.com.
SBA MEMBERSHIP
If you would like to purchase an SBA Membership, please put a check in SBA Secretary Leigha Blackwell's student mailbox (2L). Make sure your name is on the check! Please email Leigha with any questions: leigha.blackwell@gmail.com.

NOTES FROM THE ADMINISTRATION
LOAN FORGIVENESS BILL
President Bush recently signed the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007. It contains two provisions of particular interest to law students and graduates which I will very briefly summarize below.
Section 203
Section 203 of the act limits loan repayments to 15% of "discretionary income." Discretionary income is defined in the act. This means that monthly loan payments are limited to allow graduates to accept lower paying jobs and still meet their (lower) monthly payment obligation. Although this option stretches payments out, any remaining principle is forgiven after 25 years.
Section 401
Section 401 allows graduates who work for 10 years or more in a "public service" job to obtain debt forgiveness after 10 years, instead of 25.
'Public service job is defined as:
-a full-time job in emergency management, government, military service, public safety, law enforcement, public health, public education (including early childhood education), social work in a public child or family service agency, public interest law services (including prosecution or public defense or legal advocacy in low-income communities at a nonprofit organization), public child care, public service for individuals with disabilities, public service for the elderly, public library sciences, school-based library sciences and other school-based services, or at an organization that is described in section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 and exempt from taxation under section 501(a) of such Code; or -teaching as a full-time faculty member at a Tribal College or University as defined in section 316(b) and other faculty teaching in high-needs areas, as determined by the Secretary.
If you have questions about the act, please see the Associate Director of Career Services, Megan Seiner or the Assistant Dean for Student Services, Paul Rollins. The link below is to a law review article by Philip G. Schrag, Professor of Law and Director of the Center for Applied Legal Studies at Georgetown University. It provides a more in depth analysis of the act.

Each year, in addition to the attorney awards mentioned in last week's eBrief, the Bronze Award is presented at commencement to three graduating law students who, through their performance in law school and their relationships with students and professors have demonstrated their potential to be outstanding attorneys. These Award recipients possess the highest standards of ethics, integrity, and professionalism. You, the student body, submit nominations in March, so start thinking about which of your classmates are most deserving of this prestigious honor.
LEXISNEXIS SCAVENGER HUNT
Ahoy Mateys! Ye final 2 clues in the LexisNexis Scavenger Hunt have been found. (1) According to this AmJur section, pirate is defined as one who roams the sea in an armed vessel, appropriating for himself whatever vessel he chooses to plunder. (Hint: Legal > Secondary Legal > American Law Reports and American Jurisprudence 2d, Combined. Search for pirate, sea, and plunder) (2) According to this recent news article this 16 miles long, 2 miles wide location is where the infamous pirate Edward Teach met his end. Identify the location by name and State and the pirate's commonly known alternative name. (Ye don't get any hints for the final clue, but see your Student Representatives for help). The winner of the Scavenger Hunt will be announced during the LexisNexis Ultimate Career Class on Nov. 6. Sign up for the Career class on www.lexisnexis.com/myschool.
