Happy Veteran's Day and THANK YOU to all our students, faculty, and staff who have served and are serving their country. We respect and admire your efforts and sacrifices!

NOTES FROM THE SBA PRESIDENT

SENATE SEAT VACANCY

One of the two Law School Student Senate seats is vacant. If you are interested in serving in the university-wide Senate as a representative of law school interests, please participate in the application and interview process. After filling out an application, you can turn it into the Student Government office on the second floor of the Russell House across from Einstein Bagels. A Senate committee will then review your application and call you for an interview. Applications are available at www.sg.sc.edu/applications.htm.

DEAN PRATT'S TOWN HALL MEETING

TOPIC: NEW LAW SCHOOL BUILDING! Dean Pratt will conduct his final Town Hall Meeting of the semester this Wednesday, November 14th in the Law School Auditorium. He will be presenting the plans for the new law school building and updating us on the state of the building campaign.

Dean Pratt will also be fielding questions as usual. If you have questions for Dean Pratt, please submit them to Beth Davis at: davisej2@gwm.sc.edu or bring your questions to the meeting.

FACULTY SELECTION - STUDENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

Over the next few weeks, prospective faculty will be visiting campus for interviews. As part of the interview/hiring process, a panel of students will sit down with each candidate. Student feedback from these interviews will be a key factor in the Law School's hiring decisions.

We need student volunteers to conduct these interviews! If you would like to be a member of a student panel and help shape the faculty at USC, please email your name and the times you are available to your Faculty Selection Committee Representatives Tyler Winton: twinton@gmail.com or Andrea Sancho: sanchoac@gmail.com

UVA NATIONAL SOFTBALL TOURNEY

The UVA School of Law is hosting its world famous softball tourney, the unofficial "law school national softball championship," the weekend of April 4-6th, 2008. USC Law sent a quality team to the tourney last year, put on a spectacular run and nearly knocked off the UVA gold team, the eventual tournament champion. We'd like to send another team this year to attempt to break the UVA juggernaut.

Due to the tournament's proximity to exams, and students' propensity to hunker down pre-exams, we are gauging interest to see if fielding a team is even a possibility. If we have enough interest, tryouts will be held in the early spring and the USC law team will play in the USC spring intramural league.

For more information on the Law School Invitational, please see www.ngsl.com. Please email Brooks Fuller if you are interested in playing on the team or have any questions: fuller.brooks@gmail.com.

OUTSTANDING STUDENT OPPORTUNITY

Tuesday, November 13, 4:30, Law Auditorium
The South Carolina Chapter of American Board of Trial Advocates and the USC School of Law invites its members to attend a terrific CLE, for which we have applied for 2 hours of ethics credit. This event is FREE to its members, and their guests, and promises to be an engaging, entertaining, and informative event. We are proud to host this event with the USC School of Law, and feel privileged to have assembled an esteemed panel of speakers who are leaders and legends in the legal community.

The focal point of the event will be former West Virginia Supreme Court Justice Richard F. Neely's highly entertaining and insightful speech: Law is Not an Epistemological Science - which has been described as a cross between a Holmes lecture at Harvard Law School and a stand-up Chris Rock comedy routine. Justice Neely has retired from the bench, and is engaged in private practice in Charleston, West Virginia. He offers practical insight for all lawyers and law students to consider in their career choices.

Johnny P. Linton, Esq. will serve as moderator of a panel discussion comprised of: Thomas H. Pope, Esq., Charles H. Williams, Esq., Robert M. Wilcox, Esq., and H. Ham Mabry, III Esq.

RSVP by Monday, November 12, 2007 to jlinton@duffyandyoung.com

CIVIL RIGHTS SPEAKER

Thursday, November 15, 4:00, Law Auditorium
"17-year-old black teenagers who read on the same level as 13-year-old white children are on a one-way trip to a wasteland."

So says Chairman of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, Gerald A. Reynolds, who will speak at the University of South Carolina School of Law.

The Commission has long been considered the "conscience" of the federal government. Reynolds, an ideological conservative and a Republican, was appointed chairman in 2004 by President Bush.

"Discrimination against African Americans is a historical scourge, but it is time to address it differently."

Reynolds, an outspoken opponent of race-based college admission policies for minorities, supports race-neutral affirmative action, including educational outreach efforts and policies that do not distribute special benefits on the basis of skin color. Instead, he advocates "attacking the achievement gap that exists between black and white students, which is as pernicious as discrimination in denying opportunities to African Americans and Latinos."

There will be a Q & A session after Chairman Reynolds' speech with a reception immediately following in the law school lobby.
