Profile
Benjamin Means graduated cum laude from Dartmouth College, and magna cum laude from Michigan Law School, where he was an articles editor for the Michigan Law Review.
After graduating from law school, he served as a law clerk to the Honorable Rosemary Pooler of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
Prior to joining the faculty at the University of South Carolina, he practiced law at Davis Polk & Wardwell and Satterlee Stephens Burke & Burke LLP, both in New York City. He has represented media clients, including National Geographic, The Thomson Corporation, and The Journal News, and such clients as JPMorgan Chase Bank and Moody's Investors Service in matters of corporate law and litigation. His pro bono practice included successful representation of political asylum applicants from Egypt and Rwanda.
Professor Means has written about freedom of expression as it intersects with criminal law, and as it is implicated in government decisions concerning public monuments. His current research focuses on issues of corporate governance, and, in particular, the problem of minority shareholder oppression in close corporations. He teaches corporations law, business crimes, and a seminar on liberty.
