Professor Stuckey joined the law faculty in 1973. He is the leading expert on South Carolina family law. He is the author of Marital Litigation in South Carolina: Substantive Law, Third Edition (SC Bar - CLE Division 2001) (with supplements). Professor Stuckey is nationally and internationally recognized as an expert about legal education, especially education for the practice of law. He has been a visiting faculty member at Santa Clara, Vermont, City Polytechnic of Hong Kong, Alabama, Utah, and San Diego. He is an active scholar and has published numerous articles and a few books on professionalism, professional skills and values, legal education, and family law. From 1999 to 2003, Professor Stuckey served as the initial Director of the Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough Center on Professionalism during which time he developed the professionalism website for lawyers and judges, a USC Law School-based clearinghouse of information and research pertaining to the character, competence, and conduct of legal professionals (professionalism.law.sc.edu).

Throughout his career, Professor Stuckey has actively served a variety of professional organizations as well as the University and School of Law. He is a member of the Board of Editors of the International Journal of Clinical Legal Education (England). In 2006, he provided expert assistance to ABA/CEELI in the development of the Legal Education Reform Index, a tool for evaluating the quality of legal education in Central Europe and Eurasia. He has served on approximately 15 accreditation site inspection teams for the American Bar Association. He served on the University's Tenure and Promotion Committee from 2004-2007. He is a frequent speaker at national and international programs dealing with professionalism and legal education, especially clinical legal education. In 2006, he was the keynote speaker at conferences on legal education in Japan and England.

From 2001-2007, Professor Stuckey chaired the Steering Committee for the Best Practices Project of the Clinical Legal Education Association. This resulted in the 2007 publication of Roy Stuckey and Others, Best Practices for Legal Education.
