The University of South Carolina School of Law enjoys a rich and venerable tradition. Founded in 1867, it is one of the nation's oldest law schools and has long provided excellent preparation for the legal profession and for leadership in the state and the nation. Its academic program is enhanced by collaboration with several programs with a national audience: the National College of District Attorneys, which jointly sponsors the National Center for Prosecution Ethics; the National Advocacy Center, a state of-the-art training facility for state and federal prosecutors; and the Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough Center on Professionalism, which addresses issues of legal professionalism. The school provides unsurpassed preparation for leadership in South Carolina, graduating many members of the state judiciary, legislature, and executive agencies.

The School of Law's location in the state capital provides abundant opportunities for students to observe and participate in the activities of the state's courts, Bar, and government agencies. The South Carolina Supreme Court, State Court of Appeals, Federal District Court and Bankruptcy Court, as well as all state criminal and civil courts, meet within a short distance of the law school. The South Carolina Statehouse, just a few blocks from the school, is home to the General Assembly, and its grounds house many state agencies. Students benefit from these resources through clinical and judicial placement programs, internship and employment opportunities, third year practice in local courts, and career options upon graduation. Education at the School of Law is also enriched by the involvement of judges, legislators, agency officials, and lawyers as guest lecturers, adjunct professors, and mentors.

The school's Coleman Karesh Law Library, a major research library that boasts more than one-half million volumes, is the most comprehensive legal research collection in South Carolina and is among the largest in the Southeast. Its collections concentrate on American and South Carolina law and legal history, but also include significant holdings in international and comparative law. The library's print collection is enhanced by access to extensive legal and non-legal computerized resources.

The School of Law has ambitious goals for the future, as its campaign to raise $65 million to construct a new law school building is well under way. The new building will be at the very heart of the legal and governmental community in South Carolina and will be an exceptional legal resource for students, faculty, and the state.

The University of South Carolina School of Law Catalog is published annually and provides information concerning School of Law academic programs and regulations. The printed edition is the only official version of this catalog.
