March 26-27, 2007 - Coastal Conservation Seminar Visits ACE Basin

| |

Professor Josh Eagle took his Coastal Conservation Seminar students on a field trip, March 26-27, 2007, to Pritchard's Island and the ACE Basin. Professor Eagle's upper level course explores the intersection of property, environment, and land use as they pertain to South Carolina's coastal zone. Every spring the students are taken on this popular trip to the South Carolina coast. The goal of the course and the field trip is to better understand how law mediates conflicts between conservation and development. "The coastal zone is not only the place where land meets the sea; it is the place where high property values meet natural features of extraordinary ecological, economic, and cultural importance," Professor Eagle explains.

The 350,000-acre ACE Basin, named for the Ashepoo, Combahee and Edisto rivers, is one of the largest undeveloped estuaries on the East Coast. The refuge is home to abundant wildlife and serves as a habitat for many species, such as wood storks, bald eagles, white tailed deer, wild turkeys, alligators, painted buntings, and various others.

Professor Josh Eagle and students from the Coastal Conservation Seminar listen as Tom Fultz, a horticulturist from USC Beaufort, explains the unique ecology of Pritchards Island
