Center Produces Publications as Guides to Professionalism in Legal Practice

The mission of the Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough Center on Professionalism is to enhance the professionalism of lawyers and judges. The center is devoted to instilling in law students a commitment to the highest professional standards and public service and empowering them to translate their commitment into appropriate conduct when confronted with countervailing pressures in the practice of law.

This year, the center developed a pamphlet for the incoming first-year class to introduce law students to both the center and the standards of professionalism that are expected of them as current students of law and future practitioners of law. The center also developed a manual, Professionalism in South Carolina: A Resource for New Lawyers, which was distributed to all graduating law students. The publication was made possible by a grant from the Foundation of the American College of Trial Lawyers. The leadership of the Young Lawyers Division of the South Carolina Bar also provided encouragement and insights regarding the project. The center also sponsored a speakers program to help educate students, especially first-year students, about the legal profession and their roles in it. Future plans for the center include participation in the 2003-2004 orientation program with expanded emphasis on professionalism including the administration of an oath of professionalism.
