I know that you are busy, so the following are
significant points that your Alumni Association Board wants to
communicate to you.
The USC School of Law is at a critical point in its development.
The University of South Carolina School of Law is one of the most
important institutions in our great state. Its graduates serve in
numerous capacities, which benefit the state and influence its
direction and progress. Now we are calling on you as alumni to
become involved with the law school at a critical time in its
development, as it takes steps to achieve a higher standing.
Our goal is to be counted among the best of America’s law
schools.
Dean Burnele Powell has communicated to you in his recent letter his
desire and commitment to be counted among the best of America’s law
schools. Such an achievement does not happen overnight; it requires
a sustained effort on a number of fronts, including the curriculum,
facilities for faculty and students, and technology. An important
component of several of these areas is the law school building
itself—we desperately need a new building!
Private fund raising for a new building will be our
first priority beginning in the fall.
I am pleased to tell you that we are revitalizing the building
campaign. These plans are underway. Private fund raising for the
building was deliberately halted during the past two years due to a
difficult economic period and a multi-year dean search. During this
time, however, the School of Law continued its legislative strategy
to reinforce requests for additional public funding for the new
building. Key legislators in the General Assembly, which has already
committed $10 million to the building, have given assurances that
they will support a capital bond bill to provide additional state
funding. A new initiative to raise matching private funds will be
launched this fall.
The Alumni Association is important to the School of Law.
Your Alumni Association Board is working actively with Dean Powell
and the law school administration to identify areas where you can
assist. We have met with the Bar and are collaborating with them to
increase involvement in activities and programs of the Alumni
Association. To that end, I ask you to mark your calendar now for
Oct. 8 for the Compleat Lawyer awards dinner. Five class
reunions will be held at that time, one being mine. I hope to see
you all there.
In closing, alumni friends, we are responsible for the stability and
civility of this state. Your education from this public institution,
the University of South Carolina School of Law, enables you to
provide this service to your state. Join us in our efforts to become
one of the best of the nation’s law schools.
WE NEED YOU NOW MORE THAN EVER!
Sincerely,

Cathy Hoefer Dunn, President, Alumni Association Board |
