Upcoming Events and Reunions

Make sure to mark your calendars-the School of Law hopes to welcome you back for the following events! Reunions are approaching fast, where you can reacquaint yourself with old friends and share law-school memories with fellow classmates. Last year's alumni had a fantastic time enjoying each other's company and the festivities, so remember to save the date! And don't forget that the School of Law will be hosting the Voting Rights Act CLE during the same weekend as reunions and USC's Homecoming. Make the most of your trip to Columbia, catch up with friends at your reunion, watch the Gamecocks dominate in football, and earn six CLE credits at the same time!

Voting Rights Act Continuing Legal Education

The School of Law and the Law School Alumni Association encourage you to attend the upcoming Continuing Legal Education (CLE) program titled, "The Promise of Voter Equality: Examining the Voting Rights Act at 40." In recognition of the 40th anniversary of the passage of the Voting Rights Act, the law school will feature a symposium on Oct. 21, 2005, examining the Act's history and future.

At the event, nationally prominent legal scholars and litigators will discuss the Act's interpretation and application, the upcoming debate on the renewal of the Act's preclearance provisions, current obstacles to minority voter participation and representation, and the application of the Act in local litigation.

Panel topics will include the Supreme Court's projected understanding of voting rights; anticipating the 2007 preclearance reauthorization debate; obstacles to minority participation in the election process; race, redistricting and representation; and a local case study.

Participants will earn six CLE credits at the daylong symposium. All are encouraged to join the School of Law as it emphasizes the significance and timeliness of the Voting Rights Act.
