Benjamin Hodges was educated at Harvard University earning both A.B. and LL.B. degrees. He practiced law for one year in Boston and then moved to Sumter where he practiced for nine years. He thereafter became a Professor of Law at the University of South Carolina, where he taught from 1924 until his death in 1937.

Professor Hodges was renowned as an athlete, successful as a practicing lawyer, and one of the most respected, admired and loved teachers ever to teach at the University of South Carolina. In 1910 he married Virginia Childs Reynolds.
