Thomas Braxton Bryant, Jr.
1905-1983
Thomas Braxton Bryant, Jr., son of Thomas B. and Tallulah Ray Bryant, was born in Orangeburg. He received his education at Washington and Lee University, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma, Phi Delta Phi and Omicron Delta Kappa. He received his LL.B. degree in 1928, and was admitted to the Bar the same year.
He practiced in Orangeburg until his death and was the senior partner in the firm of Bryant, Fanning and Yarborough.
He was a S.C. Representative from 1931-1932, served as a City Judge from 1938 until 1944, was a State Senator from 1944-1952 and was Chairman of the South Carolina Probation, Parole and Pardon Board from 1952-1970. He was also a Robert E. Lee Associate and a member of the Alumni Board of Directors for Washington and Lee University.
He married Cornelia Smoak and had two sons, Thomas B. Bryant, III and Harry Smoak Bryant of the Orangeburg Bar.
He was a sound lawyer, trusted counsellor, able advocate, and gentleman of the old school. His unfailing courtesy, keen sense of humor and legal ability earned the respect and affection of Bench, Bar and Public.
