Joab Mauldin Dowling, Sr.
1917-1992

This son of Greenwood upon leaving that area headed to the University of South Carolina where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Geology in 1939 and a LL.B in 1941. He then headed straight to the coast of Carolina and Beaufort, that beautiful city by the sea.

He was caught up in the trauma of World War II and served as a Liaison Officer with the British Army, followed by active duty with the United States Navy serving with the Seabees in New Guinea. His legal practice carried him into all courts in the State and Federal systems from the trial courts to the highest court in each branch of our parallel systems.

He was a prime mover in the chartering of two banking institutions which were so vital to the advanced and sound planning and development of the Beaufort area. He served on the boards of directors of many financial institutions and while doing so took a leading part in the activities of civic organizations.

This man of parts, this man of vision, this devoted South Carolinian cut out many paths of progress and with his intellect and foresight was able to attract and carry many supporters along with him. His leadership was outstanding and the results he obtained were exemplary and will be long lived.
