Fred D. Cox, Jr.
1922-2000
Born in a farmhouse on the banks of Toney Creek in rural Anderson County, Fred was very much the "country gentleman." He was educated in the public schools of Belton and attended Erksine College. He served in the Army during World War II. After his discharge, Fred finished college at Furman. He went on to Harvard Law School and graduated in 1950.
Fred commenced the practice of law with Haynsworth Perry Bryant Marion & Johnstone in 1951. Over his many years in the legal arena, Fred built a very successful practice in real estate, and enjoyed a much-deserved reputation for the quality of his work and for his integrity. Fred was one of four lawyers from South Carolina listed in the real estate section in the First Edition of Best Lawyers of America in 1983.
Fred created a standard for the practice of real estate law in this state which has been recognized and admired. He tutored many of South Carolina's real estate lawyers during the 1970s and for that we owe him a debt of gratitude.
