Statement of Purpose

The purpose of the Environmental Law Society is to promote environmental awareness through education and contact with environmental law practitioners, federal and state agency personnel, environmental consultants, university students and other interested parties through monthly meetings. The Society will also promote environmental education through various research activities and publications.

Ms. Parker is the program director for the South Carolina Conservation Voters Education Fund. She is a lobbyist to the legislature, and does fascinating work for environmentalism. For more on her work as well as the Conservation Voters, generally, please see www.conservationvotersofsc.org.

6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. EDT Richland Conservation District Board Meeting
This is an opportunity for ELS students to come and see how local government works for the environment on a first-hand basis. A conservation district is a local subdivision of state government which seeks, utilizes and coordinates assistance from all available, appropriate sources, private and public; local, state, and fedearl in order to conserve and develop land, water, forest, wildlife and related resources for the benefit of all. Tonight, the Richland County Conservation District will be holding its board meeting in Columbia. It is open to the public, and any students interested in attending the meeting should meet at the law school lobby at 5:45 p.m. If possible, we will carpool to the event and the ELS will purchase dinner for student attendants at Lizard's Thicket. If you have any questions, please e-mail Amanda Bernard, amandajunebernard@gmail.com. If you would be willing to drive, please also e-mail Amanda and you will likely be reimbursed for gas use. Ken Driggers is an alumnus of the University of South Carolina School of Law. He is the founding executive director of the Palmetto Conservation Foundation, and in addition to managerial responsibilities, works on the land conservation program with Palmetto as well. Ocean Conservancy, Beach Clean Up Day!
Environmental Law Society will be taking students to a South Carolina waterway to participate in the Ocean Conservancy's International Beach Clean up day. Participants should wear clothes that they don't mind getting dirty!

Lisa Butler is a chemist at the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. She is coming to speak to all interested students about radon contamination in Richland and Lexington counties. She will be passing out literature as to how to get state-provided testing supplies in order to protect both your health and your property value.

Brad Wyche is a champion of South Carolina environmental law. His knowledge of environmental law in this state is so expansive that he wrote the book on it, literally (TWICE!). He currently works with Upstate Forever, a non-profit environmental conservation group in upstate South Carolina. For more on him and Upstate Forever, please see www.upstateforever.org.

Professor Carbone is a Geology professor at the University of South Carolina. His presentation on the potential impacts of climate change and drought upon the Southeastern United States has been widely recognized, and he has agreed to give this presentation to students at the University of South Carolina School of Law.

Mr. Mathis is the Regional 3 (Richland and Lancaster Counties) Director of the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC). He is very knowledgeable and involved with DHEC's environmental programs, and he will speak to the Environmental Law Society about DHEC's place in the environmental law realm. Lunch will be provided.
