The Healing Species

"Rescued Strays Intercepting Violence"
The Healing Species is an innovative program whose mission statement is "to help 'at risk' children break out of the cycle of 'violent thinking' and 'violent relating,' learn how to heal their own hearts, and discover true empowerment and self-esteem through 'hands on' learning of compassion, and nurturing, towards animals, and thus others. Even a child, who has never been nurtured, can learn how to nurture, and thus find a new world."
The program's goal is to stop children from abusing animals, and thus from abusing humans later as adults.
The law school club offers volunteer opportunities for law school students, raises money for the program, and helps inform the public about the program.

Community Service Projects
- Easter Backpacks
- The Healing Species is putting together Easter Backpacks for a group of kids who recently completed The Healing Species Program. These kids are considered 'at-risk' and although they generally have their basic needs met, they do not have the luxury items that many kids have. Thanks to students, faculty, and members of the community, these kids will get an Easter surprise. Each kid will receive a backpack filled with pens, pencils, notebooks, personal care items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, lotion, and other fun items such as kites, candy, sports items, and plush toys. In the classroom, these kids are saving their pennies to 'adopt an elephant.' The Healing Species will be providing these kids with some pennies to help achieve their goal.
- Classroom in Action
- Recently, The Healing Species law school members had the opportunity to see The Healing Species in action. A group of law students went to a local school and saw the program first hand. It was a great experience to see the program in work. The kids were so excited to see the dog and eager to volunteer all that they have learned. Having the opportunity to go to the schools helps put the law school member's objective into perspective.
- Halloween
- Each year, the law school puts together a Halloween party for kids at a local shelter. For Halloween '05 the kids painted gourds. Halloween '04 the kids had their face painted.
- Regular Activities
- Bake Sales: Approximately once a month, the members of The Healing Species bring in baked goods for sale in the law school lobby. All the funds are donated to The Healing Species parent organization so that another classroom can get a Healing Species instructor.
