Journal Competition

| |

The University of South Carolina School of Law has five law journals:

All Journals are staffed by 2Ls and 3Ls. Any 1L who wants to be a member of a journal their second and third years must participate in the writing competition which is held in the spring of their first year. The writing competition has two sections:

  • a Bluebooking (citation) assignment; and
  • a Memorandum writing assignment

Students are given approximately four days in late Spring (Thursday morning to Monday morning) to complete both sections. A student’s written work is then graded anonymously by the current journal members.

Each journal has its own criterion for membership. Some journals consider a student’s grades in conjunction with the student’s written work from the competition, whereas other journals only consider the student’s written work from the competition. However, no student can simply “grade on” to a journal. Students can only participate in the competition during their first year.
