The Fall 2012 Trial Advocacy Competition Case Problem Is Dedicated to the Honorable Matthew J. Perry Jr. (August 3, 1921 - July 29, 2011) and his wife and fellow civil rights activist, Hallie B. Perry (March 7, 1915 - May 21, 2012).
On the evening of April 15, 2012, Jackie Owens pulled up to the Palm Island beachfront estate of her husband, Lonepalm State Senator, Austin Lee Price. Jackie, an emergency room doctor, and Austin, a rock star legend formerly known by his stage name ALIHOT (A Legend In His Own Time), were an unlikely couple. While the couple had been on a trial separation for the past few months, that night the couple decided to have an anniversary dinner.
After dinner, the couple walked down the beach hand-in-hand, ankle deep in the ocean water. Unfortunately, this would be Jackie's last moonlit beach stroll. According to Austin, during that fatal late-night walk, a masked individual attempted to rob the couple of their belongings. Austin claims the robber shot Jackie, and then a struggle ensued, leaving Austin with four gunshot wounds. However, Seaside County Sheriff's Department's Detective Chris Oberg and the Seaside County Medical Examiner, Dr. Alex Fulton, find this to be a fictitious story to cover up a murder. On April 30, 2012, Detective Oberg proudly arrested Austin Lee Price while the entire nation watched.
Austin adamantly maintains that he is innocent, and begs for an opportunity to properly mourn the death of the love of his life.
