Timeline & Important Information

Welcome First Year Students:

Congratulations on your acceptance to law school. Below you will find the law registrar/academic services timeline and important information. We look forward to meeting you in August.

June 18, 2012

Law School Student Handbook test will be emailed to new students. Incoming 1Ls are required to take a test on the law school student handbook to become better acquainted with the administration and academic rules. The test is mandatory and must be completed by Monday, July 9, 2012.

Instructions will be sent to your University email account. To establish the account:

  • login to VIP,
  • choose technology,
  • then click onto network username which will appear in the center of the page.
  • Your email address will be network username@email.sc.edu.
  • Below your network username, you must create a password to access your email. Once you have established your account, you can access your email by going to http://www.outlook.com.

IMPORTANT: First time users of VIP must click onto the link on the VIP homepage labeled NEW STUDENT USER on the right to gain access.

To access VIP (VIP, USC's Visual Information Processing Internet site), you will need your student identification number (SSN) and personal Identification Number (PIN).

First time users of VIP must click onto the link on the VIP homepage (https://vip.sc.edu/) labeled NEW STUDENT USER on the right to gain access.

There are three ways to obtain your PIN:

  1. Online:
    1. To set your PIN for VIP, go to:
      Set Your Pin
    2. After you successfully complete this online process, you will receive the provisional PIN at the email address provided on your application for admission.
    3. If the University cannot verify your identity, or if no email address is on file, you must obtain a new provisional PIN by presenting positive ID (see below).
  2. In-Person:
    1. You may go to your University campus records office and present a photo ID to a USC registration official.
    2. Your provisional PIN will be forwarded to the email address you provide.
  3. Fax-In:
    1. You may download and complete/sign the Request to Set/Reset VIP PIN (you must include a copy of a picture id) and either fax it to (803) 777-6349.

For your security you will be required to immediately change the provisional PIN. Be prepared to choose another four-digit PIN that you will be able to recall, but no one else can guess.

Any official law school email from the law registrar/academic services office will be sent to your University email account, no third party accounts will be used (yahoo, gmail, hotmail, etc.).

Deadline for completing the Law School Student Handbook test

Week of July 16, 2012

Registration process of incoming 1Ls begins. Students will not be registered if:

  • there are holds (citizenship verification, immunization, residency, parking fines, etc.);
  • a final official transcript with degree posted has not been submitted to the Office Law of Admissions;
  • the law student handbook test is not completed with a passing score

This is a "tentative" schedule for the Fall 2012 semester. Although we will try to keep students in their original sections, we may need to move students around as people inform us they are not coming. Therefore, your "tentative" schedule is subject to change. On Friday, August 3, your schedule will be finalized.

July 23, 2012

"Tentative" schedule available on VIP. VIP, the Visual Information Processing system, may be accessed on-line through any computer at vip.sc.edu/.

If you do not have a schedule it may be due to a hold on your registration such as citizenship verification, immunization, residency or parking. To check for these types of holds, login to VIP, choose academics, then registration eligibility.

For questions regarding a hold due to your official undergraduate transcript with degree posted, please contact law school admissions (803-777-6605).

For questions regarding a hold due to the law student handbook test, contact the office of the law registrar/academic services (803-777-5221).
